Another NYC architecture FAIL

05gehry_600

After the infuriating-but-unsurprising news about the World Trade Center development, another NYC architecture project has gotten scaled back in a ridiculous way—the controversial Brooklyn Arena complex, which was to be designed by the iconic Frank Gehry, will be scaled back into this incredibly generic-looking complex. I’m not a huge Gehry fan (with the exception of the IAC headquarters in Chelsea), but at least his work is different. This new complex is just… so… bland! Very, very sad.

Scott put it well in the NY Times comment section:

Typical NY development pattern. Promise good architecture and so-called improvements. Rip out the fabric of the neighborhood or an existing handsome structure. Suddenly discover problems. Scale back. Deliver schlock.
